What is Phytoplankton?

Phytoplankton is a micro algae, a type of plankton with marine and freshwater organisms that are too small or weak to swim against the current, and exist in a drifting state.

It absorbs energy from the sun (known as photosynthesis) and nutrients from the water to produce its own food. It is neither a plant or animal.

An estimated 50-85% of the Earth’s oxygen is produced by this type of photosynthesis.

Plankton extracts come from many different sources of seaweed and algae.

It is the foundation of the oceans food chain, all other life in the ocean needs it to survive.

The extracts are full of nutrients and are an essential part of many animals diets, including whales.

Fish species rely upon a steady supply of plankton to feed, and protect their newly laid eggs.

Skin Benefits of Marine Phytoplankton

The plankton in our Marine Phytoplankton are of the algae variety, they contain vital proteins and enzymes that can improve the look of ageing skin.

Plankton is ideal to help skin conditions of dryness and redness, including rosacea and eczema.

It is safe to use for sensitive skin, as it calms where other products may inflame.

Marine Phytoplankton offers tremendous benefits to the skin due to a combination of its anti-inflammatory alkalising properties.

It is high in bioflavonoids which contributes to healthy skin by removing impurities and build ups in our skin cells.

Marine Plankton, as well as being vegan, contains highly nutritious elements, providing the necessary vitamins and minerals for skin including amino acids and micronutrients.

Essential Fatty Acids

Plankton extracts are high in essential fatty acids (EFA) which are the building blocks of healthy cells.

Helping to improve broken capillaries by providing the components that skin needs to restore itself.

EFA is essential to healthy cells and it is thought that phytoplankton contains more omega 3 fatty acid than fish.

These fatty acids penetrate the skin deeply to provide long lasting moisture properties protecting the skin from drying out and helping to improve the appearance of irritated skin.

Enzymes

Phytoplanktons enzyme properties brighten the skin, remove dark circles and impurities as well as blemishes.

The antioxidant content also protects the skin from further ageing by removing free radicals caused by sun exposure.

This protects the skin from UV radiation and blue light which help to prevent pollutants and toxins from penetrating the skin.

Zinc

With a high zinc content, plankton has important antibacterial properties, reducing the number of blemishes and pimples along with its natural moisturising properties.

Zinc is also necessary for regeneration, and promotes a stronger more vibrant looking skin.
