Our organic Bulgarian Rose Otto is a twice distilled essential oil from the region best known for producing the world’s premium roses, ‘The Valley of the Roses in Central Bulgaria’.
Sometimes known as the oil of love, Rose oil has a deep psychological effect encouraging opening of the heart while soothing the emotions and being especially good for anxiety and depression.
Due to the labour-intensive production process and the low content of oil in the rose blooms, rose oil commands a very high price.
The harvesting of flowers is done by hand in the morning before sunrise and the product is distilled same day.
The PÜRE Collection’s Rose Otto oil is produced by extracting the oil from the petals of the Rosa damascena, the damask rose, through steam distillation.
Prior to the distillation process, copper stills, are filled with the rose petals and water, and the still is fired for around one and a half hours.
After this, the vaporised water and rose oil are condensed for the first time, this distillation yields a very concentrated oil, although it is not a complete oil, as it only makes up about 20% of the final product.
When rose oil is extracted during the first distillation, the one main constituent ‘phenyl ethyl alcohol’ dissolves into the water and does not form part of the essential oil that is extracted and therefore it needs a second distillation, at this point it is not whole, it is ‘incomplete’
In order to produce a ‘complete’ oil, the phenyl ethyl alcohol needs to be distilled from the water in which it dissolved, and added back to the ‘incomplete oil’.
It is with the second distillation that the phenyl ethyl alcohol is distilled, this is the vital component of the aroma, making up the 80% of the oil that was missing from the first distillation, this now forms the complete and whole Rose oil, which can now be called Rose Otto.
